The trail descends slightly across boulder fields and meadow areas. As soon as the snow melts, brilliant yellow glacier lilies sprout and bloom, carpeting the meadows. Above, bighorn sheep browse for shrubs and grasses, seeking minerals from naturally occurring salt licks. You might hear marmots before you see them scurrying among the rocks. Look back toward the trailhead, and you see Mount Cannon, Mount Oberlin, and Clements Mountains.
Granite Park Chalet opened in 1914 and still offers rustic lodging.
